Internet Explorer flaw reveals CreditCard #'s...

Greetings from The VACM Team,

In this issue:
------------------------------------
- Internet Explorer flaw causes your CreditCard #'s and other "sensitive" data
to be sent to an attacker just by browsing to a

web page designed to gather your data...

  PATCH AVAILABLE!

****************************************
* The Bottom Line...
****************************************
IE flaw: An attacker can steal your computer's cookies.

If you use Internet Explorer (IE) 5.5 or 6.0, you need to close the
latest security hole that lets outsiders swipe cookies from your
browser.

Cookies are pieces of data that Web sites store on your
system so they can recognize you the next time you visit their
sites.

Most cookies do not carry important information, but some
irresponsible shopping sites record sensitive data (such as credit
card numbers)
in their cookies. By tricking you into clicking a
specially crafted link on an attacker's Web site or in an e-mail
message, a hacker can gain access to all your cookies.
Microsoft has posted both a workaround and a patch for the problem.
The workaround is a real "hack" in that it disables Active Scripting
completely, which will cause most sites to not display properly.

***************************************************
* What You Should Do...
***************************************************
Don't bother with the workaround.  Get the patch and fix the
problem for good.

Get the Fix...
--------------------
If you are running IE version 5.5 or 6, download and install
the update from Microsoft, here:

 IE Patch Download (ms01-058)

To find out what version of IE you are running, start the
browser and click on Help | About on the menu.

NOTE: this patch also fixes a very serious IE problem whereby
an attacker is allowed to silently download and execute malicious
programs on the computers of users who view a specially
constructed Web page or e-mail message.

******** APPENDIX - Handy How-To Tips **********

  * How To Boot into Safe Mode

Shut the computer down so that the power is off.

Turn the computer on, wait 1 second and begin pressing the F8 key
on the keyboard, once every second repeatedly. Do this until
the Windows Startup Menu appears. If you get a keyboard
error, press F1 to resume and then continue pressing the
F8 key once every second, or your PC may tell you to press another key for BIOS setup.

Select Safe Mode from the Windows Startup Menu, then press
the Enter key on the keyboard.

Windows will then boot into Safe Mode.
NOTE: This may take longer than a normal boot.

At the end of the boot process a dialog box will appear
informing you that Windows is in Safe Mode. Click OK on this dialog box.

Windows is now in Safe Mode.

If you miss hitting the F8 at the right time, Windows will boot
normally and you will not see the "Safe Mode" message.  In this
case, start from the top of these instructions until you get the
boot menu screen where you can choose "Safe Mode".  This can be
a little tricky the first time you do it.
