Greetings from The VACM Team,

In this issue:
------------------------------------
- New Nimda.E variant spreading
...not spreading as fast, but it is more destructive

***************************************************
* The Bottom Line
***************************************************
The author of the Nimda virus has recompiled the virus, changed
the names of the attachments (now 'SAMPLE.EXE' and 'SAMPLE.EML').

Nimda.E spreads via email and infected web pages like its predecessor.

***************************************************
* What You Should Do...
***************************************************
Two things you need to do- upgrade your version of Internet
Explorer (IE), and (depending on your IE version) install the
Nimda patch.  Or, you may be able to just apply the Nimda patch
to your version of IE (see below).

You should be running one of these IE versions:

IE 5.01 SP2  (5.01 may show up as 5.00.3315.1000 or some such)
  IE 5.5 SP2
  IE 6.0

1. WHAT VERSION OF IE DO I HAVE?
-------------------------------------------
To see what version of IE (Internet Explorer) you have, start IE,
click on 'Help', then 'About Internet Explorer'.  You will then see
a window showing which version (top of list) and which updates
have been applied to your IE version (bottom of list).

2. HOW DO I UPGRADE MY VERSION OF IE?
-------------------------------------------
We recommend you stick with 5.01 SP2 due to some issues in 5.5, but if
you already have 5.5, just go ahead and install SP2 for IE5.5...

You can get your IE 5.x Upgrades here:

 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/archive/default.asp

3. HOW DO I INSTALL THE NIMDA PATCH?
-------------------------------------------
Once you have upgraded to SP2 for your version of IE, apply the security
patch to protect you from Nimda and several other vulnerabilities.
The URL's are listed below.  Make SURE you know which version of IE you have
after the upgrade from step 2.  Once you are sure of the version, proceed
with the installation of the Nimda patch:

***If you have IE 5.01 SP2, get your patch here:

 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q295106/default.asp

***If you have IE 5.5 SP1, get your patch here:

 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q299618/default.asp

***If you have IE 5.5 SP2, you're all set.

***If you have IE 6, you're all set.

******** APPENDIX - Handy How-To Tips **********

  * How To Boot into Safe Mode

Shut the computer down so that the power is off.

Turn the computer on, wait 1 second and begin pressing the F8 key
on the keyboard, once every second repeatedly. Do this until
the Windows Startup Menu appears. If you get a keyboard
error, press F1 to resume and then continue pressing the
F8 key once every second, or your PC may tell you to press another key for BIOS setup.

Select Safe Mode from the Windows Startup Menu, then press
the Enter key on the keyboard.

Windows will then boot into Safe Mode.
NOTE: This may take longer than a normal boot.

At the end of the boot process a dialog box will appear
informing you that Windows is in Safe Mode. Click OK on this dialog box.

Windows is now in Safe Mode.

If you miss hitting the F8 at the right time, Windows will boot
normally and you will not see the "Safe Mode" message.  In this
case, start from the top of these instructions until you get the
boot menu screen where you can choose "Safe Mode".  This can be
a little tricky the first time you do it.
